THE BAHAMAS

When to Visit
Lasting from May to October, the wet season in the Bahamas contains the hottest months of the year and as the rainfall is quite low (by Caribbean standards) this is a good time to visit. If you're not partial to hot-and-sticky weather, then try March to April and November to December, when the maximum temperature usually sits just below 30°C (86°F). Occasionally, cold North American winds sweep down on the Bahamas during winter and spring.

The Islands
Of the 700 islands and 2,000 islets, called cays (keys), making up the archipelago, only about 30 are inhabited.  Nassau is the capital and largest city, located on New Providence.  The largest island is Andros Island. The Biminis are just 50 miles (80 km) east of Florida. The island of Grand Bahama is home to the second largest city in the country, Freeport. The island of Abaco is to its east. The most southeastern island is Inagua. Other notable islands include Eleuthera, Cat Island, San Salvador, Acklins, Crooked Island, Exuma and Mayaguana.  The islands have a subtropical climate, moderated by the Gulf Stream.
