50 Years of Triumph

This year, Boscov’s Travel is celebrating their 50 year anniversary. As these 50 years have passed by in seemingly, a blink of an eye, Boscov’s Travel has weathered some of the world’s biggest storms from pandemics, the 9/11 terrorist attacks and much more. As I sat down for a discussion with the company’s President, Pat Cinfici, who has been with the company since the beginning, I gathered my thoughts on how it must have been to work here when these world events occurred. I honestly couldn’t fathom any of this, at least until our conversation.

“Certainly, we have weathered a lot – recessions, political climates, 9/11 and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic,” Cinfici said. I had just asked her what some of the biggest challenges have been in the last 50 years of Boscov’s Travel. Her tone changed to saddened as she began to remember the many times when mountains were climbed with challenges to overcome.

The Rise of the Internet

Before the internet, Cinfici recalls handwriting plane tickets with many steps and tariff books involved. Travel Advisors also had to search through brochures, following with a call to travel partners to book their client’s travel. The process was a tedious one that they completed every day. When the Internet arose, she explained there was a time where people thought it would be the demise of travel companies – for the sole fact that people were able to book travel on their own. Unfortunately, for some companies it was. But Boscov’s Travel stood their ground with their no cost for complete vacation package planning services, their diversified product, and trusted presence in the community – all which still stand as the foundation today. Cinfici explained, “You cannot get human connection from a “box” (computer), as you would working with a Travel Advisor.” ‘This is true,’ I thought.

9/11

Cinfici recalled the worst impact for her on a personal and professional level being the 9/11 terrorist attacks. With the loss of many lives that day and the horrible memories, this day was a tragedy. Cinfici says she can “still see the day as if it was yesterday.”

She explained that Boscov’s Travel used to have the Boscov’s Department Store television department underneath them at their East location. Cinfici’s secretary at the time was at the office with her, and one of their coworkers called them as she had not come in yet.

“She called and told us a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. We ran down to the televisions and saw it. The first consensus was this had to be a fluke. We knew this was happening, but none of us thought this was a terrorist attack. As we were down there, we watched as a second plane hit the other tower. These events changed the makeup of everything,” Cinfici said with tears in her eyes. She told me the loss of lives were the most horrific thing about that day. I agreed with her.

As far as travel was concerned, the air space was closed for some time so Boscov’s Travel put a team into place who worked around the clock to get clients home safely. They rented cars from all over the country for clients just so they could drive home. Even after clients were home, Boscov’s Travel still had a lot of work to do.

“We had to face the challenges of clients being ‘understandably’ afraid to get on an airplane, for what was a very long time,” Cinfici recalled. “Not only that, but I had to eliminate positions because the business fell off. For me, this was a hard thing to do as I was affecting people’s lives and these people were my professional family. It was very difficult.” Cinfici was crying at this point. I’ve worked for her for over two years and I’ve never heard the full impact of these events. While I knew the impact was there, I finally understood the pain she felt during those very times and even now – loss.

Even after things started to settle and became more ‘normal,’ phones were not ringing as much as they used to for Boscov’s Travel. Cinfici explained, “We had to go outside the Boscov’s Travel offices to make business and to find business. This was the only way we were able to truly survive as a company. It worked, not only by my efforts but a lot of people’s efforts.”

Eyjafjallajökull Volcano Eruption

When Europe closed down due to the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano eruption, the ash affected the air which affected flights. This meant there were clients in Europe who couldn’t get home. “All of us, especially our Corporate Travel department worked tirelessly to get people home, but we got people home,” Cinfici explained. “We took our clients into different countries by boarding them via train to the next destination and so forth. As a country’s air space would close, we would get our clients to the next country. Italy was one of the last countries to close so we got them home through there.” These type of weather-related activities and even political climates are constantly changing the way people travel and Boscov’s Travel Advisors are on top of it day and night with a 24/7 emergency service line.

The COVID-19 Pandemic

We all know the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the entire world, not just a single country. Four years ago, a Global Pandemic was deemed and those days were extremely difficult for Boscov’s Travel.

“Those days were very hard. For me personally, they went very fast. My office was at my dining room table so when I would get up at 4AM, I’d come downstairs, power up the computer and try to think of an inspirational quote and message that would get people motivated. I didn’t want anyone scared and worried about what was going to happen to us. That was one of the biggest challenges during that time,” Cinfici expressed.

I personally, was not with the company at the time, but I couldn’t imagine it – what she had to do or what anyone had to do during this time. The times of the pandemic were difficult and the waters were murky. One thing I did know as I listened to Cinfici recall these events, is that she is a go-getter and cares about her staff and clients – so I knew she would push through until she couldn’t, and that she did.

Cinfici explained, “The days went by so fast because I was on the phone from morning to night with people. I couldn’t wait until we reopened the offices as I had to assist clientele and my staff at home. I was also dependent on the store and the government telling us when we could reopen. I actually think the only reason we got through the pandemic was because of God’s grace, truly. That which does not kill you will definitely make you stronger.”

With that being said, the world began to open back up and Boscov’s Travel staff were back in office. Cinfici told me, “It was hard because every day each country had different rules and regulations which were being changed. My employees were nervous to sell some things to clients because one day a country may have been open and the next it could’ve been closed again.” She explained it was a tough road to navigate. “We lost some key staff members. They left the travel industry because of how the world was and how difficult the industry was becoming due to it. This was difficult, very difficult for everyone. I don’t want to go through it again, and I don’t want the world to go through it again. I don’t want us as an industry to go through it, nor us as a company – ever again.”

Pat Cinfici only skimmed the surface of just some of the things Boscov’s Travel has seen over the past 50 years. If there’s anything to take away, it’s that as a travel company, Boscov’s Travel is subject to what’s going on in the world – whether that be weather, politics, and much more. This is why it’s so important that the company has survived.

“I believe we survived because we have diversified product. People can come here and go anywhere they want in the world. They can go on a one-day trip or take a trip around the world, or everything in between. One of the reasons we did survive through all of these hard times is because we had to change. Change is hard. Some people don’t change, but then they will not be as successful,” Pat longed. “You truly just have to put one foot in front of the other. You have to recognize the fact that if God brought you to it, God gets you through it. That’s how I face it.”

Today, 50 years later, Boscov’s Travel is still standing stronger than ever. Pat Cinfici thanks you, our valued clients and her incredible team. Boscov’s Travel would not have gotten through some of the world’s biggest storms without all of you.

My Personal Experience on Boscov’s Travel Exclusive Private Non-Stop Charter Flights to Orlando & sailing on an MSC Cruises’ cruise

Recently one of our Boscov’s Travel Advisors took our Boscov’s Travel exclusive private non-stop charter flight to Orlando. Read her incredible experience below.

MSC Cruises’ Seaside

My husband and I went on the Boscov’s Travel exclusive private non-stop Orlando charter the week of October 22, 2023. We weren’t traveling with family this trip so we decided to forego the theme parks in the Orlando area and instead take a relaxing 4-night cruise to the Bahamas along with 2-days in St. Augustine after the cruise.

As a Boscov’s Travel employee, I have taken our charter several times before and it’s always been such a pleasurable experience compared to flying out of the other airports where there’s lots of traffic congestion and extra costs.  The Reading Regional Airport is easy to get to, easy to park (we were right in front of the terminal, mere steps away), and the Boscov’s Travel check-in and TSA security were fast and efficient (all done within a few minutes).  We did not have to pay to park, pay for our seats, or pay for luggage! When you add up all of these costs, these are big savings, plus driving time to the airport is a breeze!

The Southwest Airlines flight crew was friendly and welcoming and our plane ride was very fast and smooth (we arrived early). We were booked on the MSC Cruises’ Seaside sailing to Nassau and Ocean Cay – MSC Marine Reserve, Bahamas. We met an MSC Cruises representative shortly after our arrival at the Orlando International Airport and were effortlessly transferred to Port Canaveral (less than an hour ride) where we boarded the ship.

MSC Cruises’ Seaside

We had a cabin in the Yacht Club which is an exclusive ship-within-a-ship experience with excellent service from the ship’s staff (special praise to Jordan, our waiter and Glen, our butler). As part of the Yacht Club experience, a private butler meets you at the pier and escorts you onto the ship bypassing the long lines. We were checked in promptly at their Concierge Desk and were eating a delicious lunch within minutes at their private dining room. Our Yacht Club experience included the Premium Beverage package, unlimited Wi-Fi and complimentary access to the Thermal Spa area.

Nassau Port Terminal

Our first stop was Nassau, Bahamas which has a very nice and new Port Terminal & Shops.  If you traveled to Nassau in the past, you may remember the old straw market and vendors.  This was not a pleasant experience… very claustrophobic and chaotic with lots of pressure from the vendors to buy their wares.  This new Port Terminal & Shops is very clean, bright and organized with lots of open space, beautiful landscaping and friendly vendors. Such a great improvement! After our shopping jaunt, we returned to the ship where I decided to take advantage of the Thermal Spa (my husband went off to explore the ship). I spent two hours experiencing all the features which included a steam room, two saunas (a dry and a European), a snow room, a salt room, a Vitality pool with oxygen-intensified water, an aromatherapy shower and a heated stone lounge chair. I absolutely loved these last four options!

Our next stop was Ocean Cay – MSC Marine Reserve, their private island.  This island was a former industrial site where sand was excavated that MSC reclaimed and restored to its natural beauty. What was nice about this stop was we were here overnight so we didn’t feel rushed and could enjoy a leisurely day and a half at the beach using the ship as our hotel. As part of the Yacht Club, we were escorted off the ship by our private butler (again bypassing the lines) and taken by a dedicated tram to the Ocean House Beach & Restaurant.  The Restaurant was very nice and served several options for lunch including local fish, lobster and tropical drinks.

Bimini Beach

The beach here is pretty, but we decided to walk a short distance to the North Beach which was located on the lagoon and had beautiful calm clear water with a palm tree-lined beach. On our walk we passed Bimini Beach which has a spectacular lighthouse and views. In the evening, the beach is filled with night-life including a beach party and light show!

Casa Monica Resort

Dinner at Forgotten Tonic

We disembarked the ship on Thursday morning and picked up the car rental shuttle at the pier for the next part of our adventure. We got our car then drove to St. Augustine! Our drive took a little over two hours as we took the scenic route rather than major toll-ways. We checked into the Casa Monica Resort (part of the Marriott Autograph Collection), which is a beautiful hotel built in 1888 nestled in the heart of St. Augustine’s Historic District. We spent the afternoon exploring this area which was all within walking distance of our hotel. Later, we had dinner at a quaint little restaurant called Forgotten Tonic. The restaurant reminded us of dining in a cafe on a Mediterranean street.

St. Augustine Historic District

Flagler College Hall

Alcazar Hotel/City

Spanish Moss – Fountain of Youth

Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse in the U.S.A.

The next day we took a narrated sightseeing tour of St. Augustine’s historic landmarks on Ripley’s Red Train tour. A special perk is they offer military and senior discounts, but you must ask for it.  Our driver/guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining as he told us about the history of America’s oldest city.  After this tour, we went back to the Orlando area for our overnight stay at the Embassy Suites-Orlando International Airport. The next day check-in at the airport was easy with the help of the dedicated Southwest staff at the North East Flight Departures ticket counter. We did check in three hours ahead of our flight departure time because security lines at Orlando International Airport can be very long. Our flight back to Reading Regional Airport was again enjoyable with a colorful fall aerial view of Berks County as we arrived back in Reading.

We had a wonderful vacation and the charter was truly the best way to get to Orlando! I highly recommend trying Boscov’s Travel’s exclusive private non-stop charter flights to Orlando at least once (and when you fly once with us, you’ll agree it’s the best way to get to central Florida)! My personal experience at Iberostar Rose Hall Beach Resort, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Recently one of our Boscov’s Travel Advisors took a trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Read her incredible experience below.

We traveled to Iberostar Rose Hall in Montego Bay, Jamaica at the end of March to early April, 2023 for four nights. We enjoy the fun activities, entertainment, beaches and great views that Montego Bay has to offer.  The weather is beautiful as the temperatures in winter is around a high of 82 degrees and in the summer 87 degrees. The best part? The ocean water is 85 degrees all year round! It truly is a wonderful place to visit!

To make our trip as timely and efficient as possible, we booked a personal meet and greet service for our arrival at the Montego Bay Airport. This service brings someone directly to you to assist you through customs, immigrations, and baggage claim, then to your resort. And Iberostar Rose Hall is only a half hour away from the airport! We stayed in a room on the third floor with stunning partial views of the ocean and pool.

This resort was incredible with daily pool activities, nightly entertainment, stunning views, delicious food and so much more. One of the best parts of the trip is the all-inclusive amenities! Iberostar Rose Hall offers five restaurants and 6 bars, including a pool bar. There was no time wasted with all the great things to do on the property.

When staying in Montego Bay there is a lot you can do with many excursion options to choose from if you want to stray away from your resort. On this trip we took a two and a half hour Braco Stables Private Horseback Ride and Swim excursion. This excursion picked us up at our resort to visit the scenic sugar plantations and countryside, then to the shore to swim and go bareback riding with the horses on a beautiful private beach. I highly recommend this tour while visiting Montego Bay!

We really enjoy vacationing in Montego Bay and I highly recommend going at least once. Montego Bay is a stunning vacation spot for anyone. Since I have a wide range of knowledge on the area and of the resorts, it is important that I qualify my clients to fit them with the right resort and activities for what they expect on their vacations. My personal experience at RIU Dunamar Costa Mujeres, Mexico

Recently one of our Boscov’s Travel Advisors took a trip to Costa Mujeres, Mexico. Read her incredible experience below.

We travel to Mexico two times a year and stay at different resorts each time. We enjoy the beautiful sand, drinks, and food – it’s a great place to go! In the past some of our favorite hotels that we have stayed at are RIU Palace Costa Mujeres, Hard Rock Riveria Maya, Sun Palace and Blue Bay Esmeralda. This April 2022 we stayed at the RIU Dunamar, Costa Mujeres, and all-inclusive beachfront and kid friendly resort. We loved it!

This resort is across the bay on the mainland, just north of Cancun. The beauty is its location. This area feels calm and secluded, but is just thirty minutes away from Cancun’s bustling restaurants and nightlife. Isla Mujeres is visible from the resorts in this area.

Some of the best parts of our trips to Mexico is the all-inclusive amenities! RIU Dunamar offers four specialty dinner restaurants, a lunchtime poolside barbecue grill, six bars, including a 24-hour bar with snacks, and two swim-up bars.  I would highly recommend this resort to families because of the Splash Water Park, RIU Land Kids’ Club and poolside activities during the day which are geared towards families.

When staying in Mexico there is a lot you can do with many excursion options to choose from if you want to stray away from your resort. Every time we take our vacation, we take a day trip from our resort to explore the area. On this trip we took a three-hour snorkeling excursion that picked us up at our resort to visit a coral reef, the MUSA statues which are made of material for coral to grow on, a shipwreck and underwater cenotes. The entirety of the excursion was beautiful, fun and educational. Afterward, we visited El Meco which is a small archaeological Mayan Ruins site, which was stunning.

The Mayan Ruins have eighteen structures located off the beaten path to the North of Cancun en route to Costa Mujeres near the Puerto Juarez ferry dock. It has the tallest pyramid on the Northeast Yucatan Peninsula. From the top of the Castillo Ruins one can see the Caribbean Sea, all of Cancun’s lagoons, and Isla Mujeres. I highly recommend visiting some of the Mayan Ruins on a vacation to Mexico.

Obviously, we love vacationing in Mexico and I highly recommend going at least once. Cancun, Rivera Maya and Costa Mujeres are all great vacation spots for singles, couples and families. Since I have a wide range of knowledge on the area, and with all the lodging options and areas to stay in, it is important that I qualify my clients to fit them with the right resort for what they expect on their vacations. The Ultimate All-Inclusive Experience in Mexico

The following post is written by Amy Bressler from Boscov’s Travel Camp Hill. Amy is a Honeymoon & Destination Specialist and recently visited the TRS Coral Hotel and The Grand Palladium Hotel in Costa Mujeres, just north of Cancun, Mexico.

If you’ve ever stayed at a Palladium hotel in Mexico and the Caribbean, then you will love the adults-only sister property – TRS Coral Hotel in Costa Mujeres. TRS Coral Hotel is their newest hotel that’s less than a year old and located a short 35 minute drive from the airport and 20 minutes from the famous Hotel Zone. This hotel will soon become a quick favorite to all!

Far from the bustling hotel zone, Costa Mujeres’s shores are natural dunes without seaweed/Sargassum, rocks, or reefs. Though the beaches lack natural shade from the palms, the umbrella covered loungers and Bali beds offer relief from the sun. The location gives you beautiful views of the beach, Isla de Mujeres and the Cancun skyline to the south. Palladium is fantastic for groups, families, wedding, honeymooners, and singles.

In addition to the service, the atmosphere of a resort is one of the top qualities clients look for when visiting a new hotel. The TRS Coral Hotel is warm and inviting with modern furnishes. With infinity edge fountains and an open, airy lobby, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a lavish hotel in Dubai.

This adult only all-inclusive features huge suites with butler service available for every room. With 24-hour room service, free wifi, keyless wrist band entry into your room, large soaking tub, sitting area with leather sofa, giant flat screen TV, and mood lighting, these rooms feel like your oasis away from home. The rooms include a full minibar, bath products, robe and slippers. The resort rooms feature everything you could ever want in a hotel room and it is all yours!

We all love to indulge on vacation and TRS Coral Hotel is sure to please. No reservations are needed whether you choose to the buffet, steak house, trendy bars and lounges, or healthy bar. Complemented with oceanfront views, Gaucho the Argentinian steak house was by far my favorite with their surf and turf fare. Or you can see the Chic Cabaret, a 3-hour theatrical dinner production. After dinner, there are endless trendy bars and lounges with entertainment where you can dance those calories away!

By staying at the TRS Coral, you can enjoy unlimited access to Zentropia Palladium Spa & Wellnesscenters every single day of your stay. Relax in the jetted pools, saunas, showers, salt room, and the best part feature – the ice cave!  The spa’s amazing amenities include a roof-top infinity edge pool.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly resort in Costa Mujeres, look no further than The Grand Palladium next to the TRS Coral. You’ll be greeted with an elaborate lobby – a literal art exhibit and definitely a sight to see! This resort offers family friendly rooms and facilities similar to the quality and style of other Palladium resorts throughout Mexico and the Caribbean. With modern amenities, the rooms are well equipped for even toddlers in the family.

Speaking of the entire gang, this hotel offers a bright, fun kids’ clubs and a fun splash park. Even babysitting services are available for families! This resort offers a special section called “Family Selection” – these ocean view split level suites have a Jacuzzi tub on the first level, then a full bedroom and second bath upstairs for mom and dad.  This category gives adults the same privileges as the TRS Coral guests on the adjoining resort property.

This resort features one of two worldwide Rafa Nadal Tennis Centres where you will find 8 clay tennis courts. Bearing the name of the tennis legend and recent US Open Champion Rafa Nadal, this centre offers classes for beginners as well as aspiring professionals.  Throughout the year, camps and classes are held and resort guests can play and will receive equipment for use. This feature is fun for the family and highlights the tennis star’s accomplishments! After a match, stop by the pro-shop and museum to see Nadal’s trophies and uniforms from the years.

This resort features a large convention center, a beautiful Catholic chapel for Sunday service and also capable of hosting ceremonies, the Village where you’ll find restaurants and theatre. Enjoy a 24 hour sports bar, coffee bar along with quaint shops! Make sure to check it out this area of the property as on some night’s vendors are out as well as entertainment.  The complex celebrates everything from Breast Cancer Awareness in October to the Super Bowl. There are endless activities at this well-rounded resort.

If this sound like it would be a perfect wedding destination for you, then you are in luck! There is a fantastic wedding team that will assist with any need a couple could have.  There are various Karen Bussen (wedding coordinator extraordinaire) inspired pre-packaged options or you can customize to make your client’s destination wedding totally unique.

I can’t say enough about this fantastic resort chain from the Palladium family! If you’re ready to book your Mexican getaway, we can make the process easy for you to show up and go!

Nickelodeon’s Newest Resort is Surprisingly Luxurious

The following post is written by Jennifer from Boscov’s Travel within Boscov’s in Camp Hill.  Jennifer recently visited Nickelodeon Resort on a FAM trip. In the travel industry, FAM trips – better known as familiarization trips – help travel agents learn what’s available for their clients in destinations across the globe. Jennifer traveled on the FAM in October 2016.

I had the opportunity to visit the Nickelodeon Resort in Punta Cana – WAIT, don’t stop reading because I said Nickelodeon…hear me out. While there are nods to the characters especially in the Kids play area (Just Kids), the water park and the character breakfast (additional charge) this resort has so much to offer families and adults alike.

nickresortspuntacanapropertymap-6

It’s on a beautiful stretch a beach with a gorgeous infinity pool, some ocean front restaurants and well located wedding venues.  Does that sound ‘kiddie’?  The water park is quite literally across the street – but very easy to get to with an under the roadway access and golf carts or walking paths to get there.  This is also where the ‘Just Kids’ playhouse is and the sports hub with tennis courts, soccer play area, running track, pool and video games. The sports hub is a great place for teens to hang out. This entire area is separate from the lobby, courtyard of dining and shops and the rooms.

nickresortspuntacanapropertymap-8nickresortspuntacanapropertymap-7

The Nickelodeon resort shares amenities with the Karisma resort Sensatori but these rooms are only available in the Canadian and European market. There is even an adults-only section at Sensatori and yet the amenities like restaurants, pools, spa, etc are shared. This area is a large courtyard walking area almost like a planned communities shopping area. There was family appropriate but non-branded entertainment going on in the courtyard at night. A violinist, a juggler, a mime (who hired the mime?!?) and a popcorn cart. This is an indicator that the ‘Nickelodeon’ element of the resort by the same name is really only an aspect of it. You just need to look at the pictures to see what I mean. Yes there are touches of Nickelodeon orange, shadows on the buildings of characters and a lone pineapple villa (aka Spongebob’s House) done tastefully and kind of minimalist. Let me tell you it’s a pretty spectacular villa!!

nickelodeondetails-at-nickelodeon

What is more expected of the brand are the numbers of swim up suites and rooms with plunge pools on the second and third floors, spectacular restaurants with an upscale feel, and entertainment that has nothing to do with Nickelodeon themes. My friend just took her daughter here (age 9) and her favorite thing was the swim up suite. Most of the room categories have a safety gate at the sliding glass door to prevent little ones from having access to the pool without assistance.

Nickelodeon is a family friendly LUXURY resort with as much for the parents as the kids… the name sells the kids but the luxury will convince the parents. This resort would be a great tropical follow up to an exhausting Florida theme park for families looking for a more relaxing vacation.

A Millennial’s Guide to Travel

The following post is written by Adam from the Boscov’s Travel Marketing Department.  Adam is well traveled and shares his insight and tips for the tech-savvy traveler.

As a millennial that travels frequently, I wanted to share my tips and advice for traveling in your twenties and thirties. We live in a connected world. We pay bills, get rides, and stay connected to friends and family all because of smart phones. Chances are if you looking to purchase something, you probably do the research necessary to find the best deal.

mexico-beach-2

The first step in planning a trip is research. Now I know what you are thinking “I have a smart phone, I can find the best deal out there.” But that’s not necessarily the case. Do you know all the deals that a particular travel vendor is offering? Do you know that in some cases offers can be combined? Did you know that traveling to Mexico between January and April is the best time to avoid blistering heat and bad weather? If you cannot answer these questions, and if you are conscious about spending, then it is in your best interest to contact a travel agent. Everyone can benefit from checking with a travel agent when planning their next trip.

I know what you are thinking, “Travel agents cost money.” Actually a travel agent will cost you … nothing. Here’s how it works: you book your cruise with a travel agent on Titanic Cruises for the same rate OR LESS than listed online (or with additional perks), and the cruise line pays the agency for helping you to book. You book a vacation with your local travel agent and the resort pays the agency. A study came out this year reporting that travel agents save consumers an average of $452 per trip!  Booking with a travel agent is a win-win because not only can you save time and money, but you support a local business. Yay you!

But what it really comes down to is knowledge. Millennials want options and flexibility. A travel agent has knowledge across many facets of the travel industry. From the independent traveler who seeks adventure, to the couple who wants to immerse themselves in a new culture, and the young family who is traveling with children for the first time, a travel agent can serve as a guide to find the best vacation for you. Having a travel agent who is well traveled gives you options and flexibility when planning where they want to go and what they want to do. Think of them as an app on a smartphone, free to download and specific to what you need … travel.

Once you’ve booked your trip, the next step is what you should bring. The best rule of thumb is planning with your travel agent. Look at the weather forecast for where you are going to help when it comes to what clothing to pack. It’s best to plan what you will wear day by day. Taking the time to do this will help in avoiding fees if a checked bag is overweight, allow you bring home souvenirs, and allow space for any purchases made at a Duty-Free if traveling internationally.

Apps. Can’t live with them, can’t live without them. Even all-inclusive resorts have their own apps. When it comes to apps, there are a few that are definitely helpful when it comes to traveling. Most all-inclusive resorts offer free Wi-Fi during a stay. But like I mentioned before, some even have their own app. Secrets Resorts has their Unlimited Connectivity app which allows guests to access Wi-Fi, international calling, hotel information, and make spa reservations during their stay.

Here is a list of some other travel apps worthy of downloading:

  • GateGuru: Try as we might, sometimes you will experience a layover. If it turns out you experience a long layover, GateGuru can be your best friend. This app provides you with a map of the terminals as well as reviews of restaurants within the airport. However, the most helpful features might be the “tips” section and the average wait time at each terminal’s security checkpoint.
  • Free Wi-Fi Finder: Ah, free Wi-Fi. There is a certain level of satisfaction that I as a milennial experience when I connect to free Wi-Fi. As a modern traveler, you can feel stranded and helpless without Internet access. The Free Wi-Fi Finder by JiWire shows where you can find free wireless connections in urban areas. You can search with a directory or simply enable the Wi-Fi scanner to locate the nearest hot spots.
  • Uber: Allows people with smartphones to submit a trip request, and then drivers using their own vehicles come and taxi you to your destination if you’re taking a trip while on vacation. The service is offered in 66 countries and 449 cities worldwide, though restrictions make airport pick up near impossible. This app is perfect if you want to get around any urban area you are unfamiliar with and feel safer than one would in a taxi.

When it comes to flying, airlines are starting to get creative with onboard entertainment offerings. American Airlines is starting to offer on-demand services on their flights. Select flights have a personal screen on the back of the chair in front of you. They offer a selection of free movies and TV shows, and new releases of movies which can be rented during the flight. It’s always best to check the restrictions with a travel agent before you get on your flight. Not all airlines offer free Wi-Fi and if they do, it must meet certain restrictions. For example Southwest offers free Wi-Fi, but it only honors A-List members with the free Wi-Fi aboard any equipped aircraft. jetBlue has a goal to become the first U.S. carrier to provide free high speed Wi-Fi across its entire fleet. So hopefully it is only a matter of time before other airline carries follow suit. Our suggestion: load up the movies and music on your phone or tablet from home before go.

Let’s explore traveling abroad. Like we mentioned earlier with planning a trip and what you should bring, research is key because of cultural, language and technology differences country to country to name a few. Another reason to use a travel agent! For the tech-savvy millennial, you need to know that the brick for your smartphone cord here in the states could be completely different than what is used in another country. Other countries provide electricity of different voltages through differently shaped electrical sockets. So if you’ll be traveling with electrical appliances or your phone, specific tech accessories are a must.

  • Virtually all travelers need an adapter plug. Adapters are necessary for both electrical devices (e.g., hair dryer) as well as electronics (e.g., laptop) for them to work in the various 220V outlet types found internationally. Adapter types vary by country, so get a multi-adapter or ask your travel agent which type is needed for your destination.
  • A voltage converter or transformer may also be needed if you’re traveling with any single-voltage devices where the voltage is different than the voltage provided by your destination. Read your device’s label to determine this.
  • Data plans with your phone carrier are also important. Getting hit with Roaming charges while using your phone abroad can hurt your wallet. Always check with your carrier in regards to what you can do and if any plans are available that you can use while you are traveling abroad. Or consider using an app like Facebook Messenger or Facetime when Wi-Fi’s available.

So there it is, your guide to travel in your twenties and thirties. Hopefully this will help guide you in the research and planning of your next travel adventure. And remember if you need help, it doesn’t cost you anything to work with a travel agent. Besides it’s easier to make a phone call or send an email to a travel agent, tell them what you want, and have them do the research for you!

Planning a Summer Vacation?

Planning a summer vacation can become stressful. How much should you budget? What’s the availability of the rental? Will there be activities for the kids? Do you need to bring towels and bedding? Will you cut your vacation short to avoid the traffic? How far away do you want to be from the beach?

One of the benefits of booking an all-inclusive vacation is that the planning is done for you! Costs are upfront, so there is no need to budget above the initial price.

If you’re thinking about a vacation to the shore this summer for you and your family, now’s the time to consider ‘The Shore Without the Chores.’ With Boscov’s Travel and Apple Vacations, the vacation for you and your family to Mexico or the Dominican Republic may be less than half the price of a trip to the shore. With no cooking, no cleaning, and no laundry, it’s worth comparing an all-inclusive vacation to what you’d spend at the shore!
