Q: Was this your first time visiting Africa? – A: Yes, it was. I’ve been wanting to travel there for a long time, and it was great to finally get it off the bucket list and see it for myself.

Q: What made you choose the “Majestic South Africa” itinerary for this particular journey? – A: The itinerary stuck out because I liked the balance. I wanted to see the culture and history of the cities, but I also wanted the ‘real’ Africa experience where the wildlife is in their natural environment. Moving from a modern city one day to a dramatic mountain range or the bush the next kept the pace interesting.

Q: Where exactly did the tour start and end, and which cities did you visit in between? – A: The trip started with a three-night stay at the Victoria & Alfred Hotel in Cape Town’s waterfront district. After the city, I caught a quick 90-minute flight over to Port Elizabeth, followed by a comfortable drive up to Shamwari Game Reserve. I spent three nights there, then another three nights in the Kruger National Park area, eventually finishing the tour in Johannesburg. It was a lot of ground to cover, but the transfers between the cities and the bush were pretty seamless and were included in the tour.

Q: What was all included in the tour? – A: The tour included all the domestic flights within Africa, land transfers, and the bulk of the meals and excursions. You get expert-led safaris twice a day, and have the same guide for your entire stay at the reserve which really adds to the experience. For the most part, once you’ve covered your international airfare, you’re just looking at gratuities and a few meals on your own.

Q: This tour covers a lot of ground—how was the pace? – A: Even though we covered a lot of ground, the pace was surprisingly relaxed. It’s a good blend of guided tours and free time. In Cape Town, I had plenty of room in the schedule to just wander the waterfront and hit the shops for some souvenirs. The only part that really picks up the pace is the safari, but that’s by design. They want you out there as much as possible to give you the best shot at spotting the Big Five, so those days are definitely more active.

Q: South Africa’s seasons are opposite to ours in the Northern Hemisphere. How did the weather impact your packing and experience? – A: Knowing the weather for each stop is huge. I traveled in October, which is their spring, and the big takeaway is: pack layers. Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate, so even on a nice 75°F day, the temperature drops into the 50s or 60s as soon as the sun goes down. Once you head inland toward Kruger, it definitely heats up. In the summer months, you’re looking at 90s during the day. Basically, if you’re going in their summer (Dec-Feb), prepare for the heat. If it’s winter (May-July), you’re going to want a jacket for those early morning game drives.

Q: What documents or currency did you find most essential to have ready throughout the trip? – A: One of the best things about South Africa is that U.S. travelers don’t need a visa, so all I needed was my passport and my travel documents. For money, they use the South African Rand (ZAR). The exchange rate is usually very favorable for us. It was roughly $1 to 18 ZAR during my trip, which makes everything from meals to souvenirs feel like a bargain. I used a mix of local currency and U.S. dollars. While I’d definitely recommend having some ZAR on you for smaller things, many guides actually appreciated being tipped in USD. Having both on hand is the way to go.

Q: Did you find it necessary to learn any specific phrases, or was English widely spoken? – A: English is spoken pretty much everywhere you go. South Africa actually has 12 official languages, and you’ll definitely hear Afrikaans in the cities or tribal languages like Zulu and Xhosa in the more rural areas. It’s a unique mix, but since English is the main language for business and tourism, communication was never an issue. It’s always good to learn a few local greetings, but you’re fine sticking to English.

Q: The tour starts in Cape Town, often called one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Did it live up to the hype? – A: Absolutely. Cape Town is easily one of the most impressive cities I’ve been to. It’s hard to beat the setup there, with Table Mountain sitting right behind the city and the coastline stretching all the way down to the Cape of Good Hope. It’s a rugged, good-looking city that actually delivers on what you see in the photos.

Q: Between the penguins at Boulders Beach and the views from Table Mountain, which “postcard moment” was your favorite? – A: While Table Mountain was beautiful, I have a soft spot for the African penguins at Boulders Beach. It’s not every day you get to visit a real-life colony with hundreds of native penguins just hanging out. Watching them waddle down to the water and bask on the rocks was pretty surreal. You cannot touch or hold them, but they’ll come right up to you, so you definitely want to have your camera ready.

Q: After the cosmopolitan charm of Cape Town, how did it feel to transition into the wild heart of the Game Reserve? – A: It was an exciting transition. Cape Town has so much going on that it’s incredible to think that’s only the beginning of the trip. Pulling into the safari camp was incredible. It looks exactly like you’d expect from what you see on TV, but seeing it in person is a completely different experience. It’s one of those moments where you realize you’re finally in the middle of it all.

Q: Part of this itinerary involves hopping on smaller “bush planes” to reach the lodges—what was that experience like? – A: Surprisingly, a lot of the airports serving the safari areas are big enough to handle mid-sized jets. I flew with South African Airways regional airline, Airlink, which uses anything from larger planes down to 20-seat turboprops. The best part was landing at the airport near Kruger. The terminal has these thatched roofs and dark wood walls that give you an immediate ‘Africa’ feel as soon as you step off the plane.

Q: Out of the four lodges you stayed at (Cape Town, Shamwari Game Reserve, Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, and Johannesburg), which one was your favorite, and why? – A: Eagles Crag at Shamwari Game Reserve was by far my favorite. It perfectly balanced modern luxury with the feeling of being totally immersed in the wild. The lodge is tucked deep within the reserve, so you’d hear everything from lions roaring in the distance to eagles flying right past the overlook in your room. It was an incredible experience to be in such a comfortable spot while the bush was coming alive right outside the door.

Q: One of the biggest perks of these lodges is the location—what was it like waking up to the wildlife right outside your window? – A: No matter which reserve you’re at, you’re going to see incredible scenery and plenty of wildlife. There’s nothing quite like waking up to the sounds of lions or elephants right outside your room. Just keep in mind that most game drives start with a 5:00 AM wake-up call. It’s usually still dark when you’re getting ready, but being out there as the sun comes up makes the early start completely worth it.

Q: We all want to see the “Big Five” (Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant, and Buffalo). Which one was the most elusive or exciting to spot? – A: The lion was by far my favorite to spot. Every one we encountered was incredibly close to us. There was one moment that was just surreal because it was so quiet that you could actually hear the wind. We were close enough that you could see the lion’s mane blowing in the breeze. It’s one thing to see them on TV, but being a few feet away from them is a completely different feeling.

Q: The “Sundowner” is a classic safari tradition. Can you describe the feeling of watching the sunset over the savanna? – A: If the weather cooperates, the African sunset is incredible. When the sun hits the horizon, it lights up the whole sky in this deep orange-red and silhouettes all the trees in the distance. It’s a really peaceful way to end the day, just sitting there taking in the view and listening to the bush quiet down. It’s easily one of the best parts of the whole safari experience.

Q: From the world-class restaurants in Cape Town to the fireside meals on the safari, how would you describe the culinary journey on this tour? What was your favorite meal? – A: Between Cape Town and the safari, I got to try a lot of flavors I’d never had before. Everywhere we went had plenty of options, so you don’t have to worry if you’re a picky eater, but I’d definitely recommend trying the local food. It’s unique, and you may not get another chance to try it elsewhere. Two of the standouts for me were the impala and springbok. When they’re grilled on the barbecue, they’re actually delicious.

Q: If you had to pick one “Signature Moment” from the entire trip that you’ll never forget, what would it be? – A: It’s a toss-up between the Cape Peninsula tour and the Shamwari Game Reserve. Both of them gave me that ‘awe’ moment where it really hit me that I was in Africa. Whether it was the coastal views or being out in the middle of the reserve, those were the parts of the trip that I’ll never forget.

Q: For someone who has never been to the continent, why is this specific tour a perfect “first-timers” introduction to Africa? – A: This tour hits all the ‘must-sees’ in South Africa at a more relaxed pace, so you actually get to enjoy each spot without feeling rushed. It’s also a great first-timer destination because the health risks are relatively low compared to other parts of the continent. It’s also incredibly accessible for a first-timer—it’s one of the easier regions of the continent to visit in terms of travel requirements and health prep. Most of the areas we visited are very low-risk, making the whole experience feel much more like a standard vacation than a rugged expedition. It’s a very smooth, comfortable way to see Africa for the first time.

Q: A common concern is the long journey to get there. Now that you’ve done it, what would you say to a client who is worried about the travel time? – A: Don’t let the travel time intimidate you—it’s actually very manageable once you see the options. If you prefer the most direct route, there are nonstop flights out of Newark or D.C. that get you there in about 16 or 17 hours, which is a great way to just settle in and wake up in Africa. Or, you can break the trip up like I did, connecting through Addis Ababa on the way down to Cape Town and then took the nonstop home from Johannesburg. It’s a long flight, but the experience at the other end makes every hour worth it.

Q: How does experiencing a land tour like this compare to a cruise or a standard resort vacation? – A: A land tour like this gives you so much more variety because you are seeing several completely different environments in one trip. Unlike a cruise or a big resort, you are not surrounded by crowds. Most safari groups are small, sometimes as few as 12 people, so the whole experience feels much more personal. It allows you to really immerse yourself in the destination.

Q: Is there anything else we did not discuss that you would like to mention? – A: One thing to keep in mind is how easy the entry process is for U.S. citizens. Since you do not need to worry about a tourist visa or extra paperwork before you fly, it really simplifies the planning process. It is just one more reason why South Africa is such a great choice for a smooth and stress-free international trip.

Q: Would you recommend this tour to other travelers? – A: Absolutely, and it is helpful to know that these vacations are very flexible. My Personal Experience on a Spain & Portugal Land Tour: Q&A Edition

In November 2025, one of our Boscov’s Travel Advisors embarked on a Spain & Portugal land tour! Read her incredible experience below:

Q: Was this your first time visiting Spain or Portugal? – A: Yes, it was! Portugal has been sitting at the top of my personal bucket list since I was about 13 years old. I’ve been planning that visit in my head for years!

Q: Where exactly did the tour start and end, and which cities did you visit in between? – A: Our 8-day adventure kicked off in Lisbon, Portugal, and wrapped up in the vibrant city of Madrid, Spain. In between, we hit some incredible spots! We traveled through Portugal, stopping in Tomar, Fátima, and Porto, before crossing into Spain to explore Salamanca. The whole trip spanned from November 1st to 9th, 2025 (we left the evening of the 1st and arrived the morning of the 2nd).

Q: What was all included in the tour? – A: The tour covered all the big necessities: our hotel accommodations and motorcoach transportation. The best part was having the support of both a knowledgeable Tour Director and an excellent Coach Driver to handle the logistics. We also had great morning starts with breakfast included most days, and three memorable group dinners: the initial Welcome dinner, a dinner in Salamanca, and the final Farewell dinner.

Q: The tour you took travels in the “off-season.” Did you notice fewer crowds at the major sites? – A: Yes, this was absolute perfection for me! I genuinely love traveling in the off or shoulder season. We definitely noticed less crowds at the major sites, which is always a bonus, and it tends to be more cost effective. On top of that, I can often travel efficiently with only a carry on and a personal bag—making the whole experience simpler.

Q: What was the weather like during the November/off-season travel, and what advice do you have for packing for that time of year in Spain and Portugal? – A: The weather was fantastic—this is exactly why I love traveling to European cities this time of year! What I wear at home is generally what I pack, though I always pack with a caution for the occasional chill or rain. My wardrobe included just three pairs of pants (to rotate), four tops, two sweaters, a jacket, a scarf, and two pairs of comfortable shoes. My best advice? Color block everything so it all mixes and matches easily. Also, the outfit I wear on the flight out is always the one I wear on the way back!

Q: What documents or currency did you find most essential to have ready throughout the trip? – A: Only my passport was needed the majority of the time, especially when we were in transit. European travel is very easily navigated now using digital payments like Visa Tap to Pay or Apple Pay. If currency is needed for things like street vendors or quick street food, I always just use an ATM while in destination rather than exchanging any money ahead of time.

Q: Did you find it necessary to learn any specific phrases in Spanish or Portuguese, or was English widely spoken? – A: I came prepared for Spanish—I’ve been learning it since the 6th grade and have an impressive Duolingo streak going! However, I don’t speak Portuguese. For any language I don’t know, I always teach myself three phrases (‘Hello,’ ‘Thank you,’ and ‘Good Evening’ in the local dialect), and how to count to three. I found this incredibly useful and it almost always earns a positive reaction. Just making the attempt really goes a long way with locals! English was more widely spoken in Portugal (they often asked if we spoke it since Portuguese is a less common language for visitors). In Spain, however, they were a little less on wanting to speak English, but if you made an effort to speak Spanish first, they were much more open.

Q: Out of the four hotels you stayed at (Lisbon, Porto, Salamanca, or Madrid), which hotel was your favorite, and why? – A: Yikes, that’s a tough ask because they were great for different reasons! For an adventurer’s convenience, I absolutely fell in love with the hotel in Lisbon—it was clean, modern, and perfectly central, allowing us to just exit and wander until we were tired. But for the ‘wow factor’ hotel, the one in Salamanca was unforgettable. It was a stunning hotel on a vineyard with big beds and beautiful, sprawling grounds—a real stunner in the middle of nowhere!

Q: What was your favorite city that you visited and why? – A: That is absolutely not a fair question, haha! I truly loved them all, but Lisbon now has my heart. I know I have to return to spend more time exploring. Porto was also incredibly charming, being right by the sea gave it a unique energy, and the food there was delicious! And finally, Madrid was impressive in its own way—it was so clean, very walkable, and filled with fantastic restaurants and markets right at your fingertips.

 Q: How was the pace of the 8-day tour? Did you feel you had enough time in each city? – A: The pace was actually pretty great! My strategy on these kinds of tours is always to participate in the included activities, and then play it by ear for any optional excursions. I knew going into this trip that I really wanted the freedom to explore independently and not be with the group at all times. The only optional tour I opted for was Toledo, because I knew I’d need both the transportation and the local guide to truly appreciate its history. This approach worked perfectly, and the overall pace still allowed me to make new friends each day!

Q: The tour includes several UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Historic Centre of Porto, Old City of Salamanca, etc.). Which UNESCO site impressed you the most? – A: While the whole trip was packed with incredible history, the optional excursion to Toledo brought me to the UNESCO site that impressed me the most. It just blew me away due to its incredible mix of cultures. It’s famously known for the medieval Arab, Jewish, and Christian monuments packed within its walled Old City. You can truly feel the history in every street! The fact that it was also the former home of the legendary Mannerist painter, El Greco, just adds another breathtaking layer.

 Q: In Lisbon, what stood out most to you at the Monument to the Discoveries and Belem Tower? – A: While the monument itself is impressive, the most memorable feature for me was actually on the ground! The breathtaking 50-meter-wide rose compass mosaic is embedded right in the pavement, complete with a map of the world detailing the explorers’ routes.

 Q: What was the atmosphere like at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary in Fátima? – A: The atmosphere at Fátima was one of quiet and peace—it was incredibly powerful to witness. Across the very large courtyard, two individuals performing acts of penance—one on her knees and the gentleman full-body down. That sight immediately conveyed the severity and personal faith taking place in that sacred space.

 Q: In Porto, what was the most impressive part of the Stock Exchange Palace? – A: By FAR… it has to be The Arab Room! It is an opulent and truly intricate space. The Moorish Revival design, which was inspired by the Alhambra Palace in Granada, is simply stunning. It features lavish gilded woodwork, brilliant gold leaf decorations, and a beautiful, complex painted ceiling.

Q: The Prado Museum in Madrid is a highlight. Which masterpiece by artists like Goya or El Greco was your favorite? – A: Choosing a single masterpiece is impossible, the Prado is overwhelming in the best way! In fact, the scheduled tour time was too short for me, so we decided to stay longer, spending two and a half extra hours exploring independently. Highlights included Isabelle II Veiled, Goya’s incredible Black Paintings—they are so dark and unsettling—and El Greco’s intense portrait, The Nobleman with his Hand on his Chest.

 Q: What was the most picturesque view you saw on the tour? – A: The most picturesque view was definitely the approach to Toledo! The moment the road revealed the city itself was spectacular—the iconic, panoramic sight of the walled city is simply unforgettable. Once inside, the architecture of Toledo continued to amaze, and the sheer grandeur of the Cathedral’s interior was equally remarkable.

 Q: What was the most significant cultural difference you noticed between Portugal and Spain during the journey? – A: The cultural differences were fascinating! In Portugal, I noticed people tended to be more reserved. Here, English was more widely spoken, which I learned is often due to them watching subtitled media! However, Spain was marked by a vibrant, public passion, a clear sense of regional differences, and a much later social rhythm, particularly with their late-night meal times.

 Q: What was your favorite thing you ate on the trip? – A: Believe it or not, I found some of the best seafood and even the most amazing Italian dishes I’ve ever eaten. While the Mushroom Risotto was a decadent, cozy highlight, my favorite thing will always be the Pastel de Nata—chef’s kiss!

 Q: How was the included Welcome dinner in Lisbon and the Farewell dinner in Madrid? – A: Both the Welcome dinner in Lisbon and the Farewell dinner in Madrid were wonderful additions. They provided a much-needed time to get situated at the start and relax at the end, without having to worry about finding the right time or place on otherwise busy travel days. The real value is it’s the perfect way to gather with the group as like-minded people, sit together, and genuinely learn about one another outside of the daily touring schedule.

 Q: You had a Local Favorite experience with a wine tasting and dinner near Salamanca. Can you describe the setting and the local flavors? – A: This was a fantastic experience! For the tasting, we were presented with two varieties of wine: a white and a red. We learned about the difference in the age of the grapes and the fermentation process. The dinner that followed was well-balanced, not overbearing, and widely enjoyed by everyone.

 Q: Did you try any of the optional dinner excursions, like the Fado Music and Dinner in Lisbon? – A: No, we actually skipped the optional dinner excursions. We preferred hitting the streets to try a more à la carte dining approach. That meant looking up local favorites and creating our own dinner: light snacks or appetizers along the way, followed by a seated dinner, and then dessert on our feet as we walked back to the hotel. It was a true culinary adventure!

 Q: The tour includes a Port wine tasting in Porto. How was the experience at the local cellar? – A: The Port wine tasting was a definite highlight! The Port wines were delicious and complex, and the cellar itself—with all its barrels—was beautiful in its own right. Simply remarkable!

 Q: Is there anything else we did not discuss that you would like to mention? – A: Absolutely! If I had to summarize what makes Spain and Portugal so incredible, it’s the sheer diversity: the rich architecture, the sweeping landscapes that take you from beaches to rivers, the vibrant cultures with their unique food and music, and the countless historical sites. The best part is the constant discovery—literally every corner we turned, we were saying, ‘Wow,’ ‘Oh my goodness,’ and ‘That is stunning.’

 Q: Would you recommend this Spain & Portugal tour to other travelers? – A: I would highly recommend this Spain & Portugal tour! It’s an incredible journey that will inspire your tastebuds, expand your knowledge of history, and offer moments of spiritual enlightenment. It truly stands out because it’s so very different than the typical European cities that often get much more tourist traffic—this trip offers a unique, enriching experience.

 Q: Would you visit Portugal & Spain again? – A: Absolutely, yes! Without a doubt, I will be returning. My heart and spirit need more time in Lisbon. Seeing these regions has only fueled my desire to go deeper into Spain—perhaps Mallorca or Seville for my next stop!

In June 2025, one of our Boscov’s Travel Advisors had the opportunity to travel to Mexico to be part of the ALG Mega FAM trip. Read about their experiences below:

Q: What is a MEGA FAM? – A:  A MEGA FAM is a large, educational trip designed for travel advisors to experience destinations, resorts, and activities firsthand—so they can better understand what they’re selling to their clients.

For this trip specifically it was called, “Pros on the Go,” a MEGA FAM hosted by Apple Leisure Group Vacations (ALGV). It brought together 150 travel advisors, who were split into small groups and stayed at eight different resorts. This allowed them to explore a variety of properties and get a true feel for each one.

Before the main event, there was also a special “Pre-FAM” in Tulum for 19 chosen top advisors, offering a more exclusive experience. Along with tours and experiences, the MEGA FAM included a full day of professional development, giving advisors valuable training to sharpen their skills. In short, it’s a hands-on, high-impact learning trip that helps travel professionals become even more knowledgeable when planning the perfect vacation for their clients.

Q: Was this your first time in Mexico? – A: Not at all! I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Mexico at least 11 times, including four trips just in the past year and a half. Each visit has offered something new—whether it’s exploring a different region, diving deeper into the culture, or simply enjoying the incredible food and hospitality. It’s a country I always look forward to returning to.

Q: Which resort surprised you the most and why? – A: Hyatt Zilara (formerly Secrets Capri): The resort was absolutely beautiful—elegant yet relaxed, with a layout that made it easy to navigate without feeling overwhelmed. Being an adults-only property added to the peaceful, upscale atmosphere. One of the standout features was the variety of dining options available. They offered everything from casual bites to more refined meals which made it easy to find something delicious no matter the craving. Overall, it was a perfect blend of comfort, convenience, and luxury.

Q: Out of the resorts you went to, which would be your top recommendation for couples? – A: Secrets Tulum – The new adults-only Secrets Tulum was absolutely incredible. It offers a sleek, modern vibe with luxurious touches throughout, making it an ideal choice for a romantic getaway. Whether you’re planning a honeymoon or celebrating an anniversary, the atmosphere, service, and attention to detail makes the whole resort truly special.

Q: What would be your top recommendation for families? – A: Dreams Sapphire – For families, Dreams Sapphire is a standout. It’s packed with activities that go well beyond the usual resort offerings including: a rock-climbing wall, archery, a bungee trampoline, a water park, a batting cage, mini golf and more. Plus, the resort has an excellent kid’s club that caters to all age groups, giving parents the perfect balance of relaxation and family fun.

Q: Which resort would you recommend for clients looking for a ‘party’ style resort? A: If you’re looking to party on a budget, Riu Palace Mexico is a solid choice. While the amenities are fairly basic compared to more upscale resorts, the vibrant, high-energy atmosphere more than makes up for it. It’s all about the fun here which is perfect for social travelers who want lively entertainment, music, and a great time without breaking the bank.

Q: Which resort would be your top pick for clients who want full-on relaxation? –  A: If you’re craving peace and quiet, or romance, both El Dorado Casitas and Secrets Tulum are excellent options. Each offers a laid-back, intimate vibe with beautiful surroundings and thoughtful touches. These resorts are ideal for couples looking to unwind and reconnect. Whether you’re lounging in a private cabana or enjoying a quiet dinner under the stars, these resorts create a serene escape.

Q: Did you do anything off resort properties like an excursion? – A: We had the BEST excursion with Amstar at the brand-new adventure park ATVX—and it was unforgettable! We kicked things off by tearing through the jungle on 4-wheelers, which was an adrenaline rush of its own. But the real thrill came next, a high-speed boat ride that’s definitely not for the faint of heart! It was fast, wild, and absolutely exhilarating. If you’re looking for a unique mix of adventure and excitement, this experience is a must.

Q: What was the most informational thing you learned throughout your trip? – A: One day was dedicated to trainings and seminars, and the standout session was with a professional photographer who completely blew us away. He revealed tips and features hidden in our own cell phones that most of us had no idea even existed! His presentation was not only fun and engaging, but also incredibly useful—especially when it came to using our own photos for more effective marketing. It was one of those rare sessions that was both educational and entertaining, and left everyone inspired to elevate their visual content.

Q: How likely are you to stay at any of the resorts you visited and why? – A: Over the years, I’ve had the chance to stay at several of these resorts, and it was great to see the recent renovations. They’ve really refreshed the spaces while keeping the charm of each resort intact. Since this is truly one of my favorite destinations, I’d be happy staying at almost any of the properties we visited. That being said, the Bahia complex and the Riu properties aren’t really my personal preference mainly due to differences in the overall atmosphere and what they have to offer. But everyone’s travel style is different, and that’s the beauty of having so many options in the area.

Q: What did you learn that a client wouldn’t necessarily know about all-inclusive vacations? – A:  I spend most of my days explaining to clients just how amazing all-inclusive vacations can be, but being immersed in the experience again reminded me why they’re so appealing. The biggest takeaway is how stress-free all-inclusive vacations are. From dining and drinks to activities and entertainment, everything is taken care of. Clients might not realize how much value and convenience this really offers them until they experience it firsthand. It’s a seamless way to travel with no budgeting for meals, no juggling reservations, but pure relaxation and fun. So, my advice? If you’re even thinking about it, do it!

Our Personal Experience Staying at Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres, Mexico: Q&A Edition

Q: How did you get to your destination? Airline? Transfers? – A:

Airline: We flew Frontier Airlines which can be a part of your complete vacation package. Something very near to our hearts is that Frontier Airlines is “America’s Greenest Airline,” with the lowest (by a significant amount) emissions and carbon footprint. The smaller tray tables are large enough for an iPad or Kindle, beverage, phone, or notepad. It even has a ledge so your device is cradled and doesn’t fall or slip off. The arm rests are also thinner to eliminate aircraft weight which also makes the seats wider. They are more comfortable and give more than enough leg room. The flight attendants were friendly and kind. We had a smooth and pleasant flight!

Transfers: We used Amstar’s roundtrip transfers from the airport to the resort. Amstar is one of our preferred transfer and excursion travel partners. The services provided by Amstar really stand out in terms of quality and reliable services. Our transfers were relaxed and comfortable on every level. You can be assured you will have safe and clean transportation, and a safe and secure experience!

Q: What resort did you stay at and was it all-inclusive and for how long? – A: We stayed at Secrets Playa Blanca, Costa Mujeres. Yes, the resort is all-inclusive with food and beverage. We stayed here for three nights.

Q: Where is Costa Mujeres? – A: Costa Mujeres is in Mexico, about 30 minutes north of Cancun. This is a very safe area. It is calm and secluded with pristine beaches, clear water and white, soft sand. The resorts are in a gated community and you need to pass security checkpoints to enter into the resorts. Isla Mujeres sits right across of Costa Mujeres which protects the beach from sargassum – a big plus!

Q: What type of room did you stay in? Tell us about it? – A:  We each stayed in a Preferred Club Jr. Suite Ocean View! The room had everything needed including plenty of seating areas, a fully-stocked mini bar, and bedside adjustable reading lights. Plus, the balcony had a sofa, an outdoor tub, and tables. A huge plus was the fantastic bathroom with a magnifying light-up vanity mirror, a soaking tub for two, and big walk-in shower with a clothing line to hang up wet swimsuits. The room décor was beautiful and the beds were very comfortable – it was one of the best nights’ sleeps!

Everything was well kept and extremely clean. We had housekeeping service twice a day and towels were always replaced. Even after visiting the beach and getting sand on the floor, it was cleaned up right away during the next service. Since we stayed in the Preferred Club, we were also able to enjoy the Preferred Club Lounge. The lounge is open-air with a huge bar and plenty of space to relax at night. It also had an infinity pool overlooking the ocean – stunning views!

Q: What did you love most about the resort? – A: We loved everything the resort had to offer including the most welcoming staff, excellent service, delicious food/drinks, enjoyable entertainment, gorgeous rooms, incredible pools, a pristine beach, and the nature-inspired beauty of the resort. Secrets Playa Blanca is by far one of the nicest all-inclusive resorts we have stayed at.

Q: How was the staff at the resort? – A: The staff at the resort were truly was amazing. They were friendly, eager to assist you, and happy to be there. Each employee met you with a smile and pleasant greeting (sometimes even by your name!). You could tell everyone took great pride in their work and cared about guests.

Q: How was the dining? – A: The resort offers many dining options including six al a carte restaurants, a buffet, a grill, and a café! The food was outstanding, the buffet had a great variety, and the staff took care of one traveler who had an allergy every time. The food was truly top-notch and we wish we had more time to explore the options even more!

Q: What was your favorite restaurant? – A: We all have our own favorite from the resort including:

Coco Café was the perfect place for a morning person with lattes and breakfast! The choices also changed throughout the day so you could pop in and out if you were hungry or leaving the property for an excursion (to grab a quick snack or caffeine).

ASADO, the fire show, including a BBQ dinner was just WOW! The food was plentiful and delicious, and the fire show was incredible (it felt like Cirque du Soleil)! The entire evening was an amazing and authentic experience.

Q: How were the bars? – A: The bars were great! We enjoyed the Sports Bar, Music Bar Lounge, Beach Bar and Swim Up Bar! The resort also offers Desires which is a music bar lounge with a DJ, dance floor, and outdoor fire pit.

Q: What types of activities does the resort have? – A: The resort had a multitude of activities! There were exercise classes, pickleball courts, workshops, a theatre (with different shows each night), sunken fire pits to socialize around, and entertainment like a saxophonist at the pool.

Q: How was the pool and beach? – A: The pools and beach on property were incredible! The chairs were so comfortable that you did not even need a towel to lay down. In the ocean, the water was the prettiest blue you could imagine where you could see straight down to your toes. We know many clients are concerned about sargassum in Mexico, but we must say, the entire area was gorgeous and perfect for those who love the beach!

Q: Is there anything else we did not discuss that you would like to mention? – A:

This resort does not have any wristbands or towel cards, which is something some clients seek when looking for a resort!

When you enter any enclosed space within Secrets Playa Blanca you get a different scent of aromatherapy. The resort implemented this amazing concept and we are all for it! An example of this is: you enter an elevator to smell lavender, but then walk in the sun with the Caribbean breeze to only enter a lobby in the next building and are greeted with the smell of sandalwood. The concept was so incredible and immersive!

With every meal you are offered sparkling or flat water, and given a choice of lemon, lime, or cucumber for your garnish/ flavor.

The team that built this resort paid attention to detail! From the pretty French dishes in the French restaurant, to the olive tree growing in the Italian restaurant, Portofino… all of the restaurants make you feel as if you are stepping into that culture – fabulous!

Q: Who would you say this resort is most suited for? – A: This resort is the perfect adults-only all-inclusive resort and is perfect for any age 18+. The resort is set for young and old, honeymooners, babymooners, friends, families with adult children, and singles – for all!

Q: Would you stay at Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres again? – A:  Yes! This resort surpassed our wildest dreams. The service was top notch, and the facilities were clean and well-maintained. We recommend this resort to anyone wanting to be spoiled. We also think the Preferred Club is worth if it is in your budget!

My Personal Experience Onboard Royal Caribbean International’s Brand-New Icon of the Seas: Q&A Edition

In January 2024, one of our Boscov’s Travel employees went on an inaugural cruise onboard Royal Caribbean International’s Brand-New Icon of the Seas! Read her incredible experience below:

Q: Was this your first time sailing on Royal Caribbean? – A: It was! Working in the Marketing Department, I’ve been promoting Royal Caribbean to our clients for 11+ years and was so excited to be able to experience the product for myself.

Q: Where did you sail to and from? – A: We sailed from the Port of Miami, FL to Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, Bahamas.

Q: What stateroom did you stay in? – A: We stayed in an Infinite Veranda. This stateroom type can be found when you sail with both Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises. It takes the traditional balcony (with door and outdoor seating) and turns your stateroom into part of the balcony with a floor to ceiling window that opens halfway. I personally LOVE this type of stateroom as it really extends the length of the room and who doesn’t love sleeping with fresh wind blowing in from the sea?

Q: How did you feel about the Icon of the Seas being the biggest cruise ship in the world? Could you tell? – A: The bigger the better, in my opinion. I know speaking with a lot of friends and family, they said “it would be too big for me”, but honestly, every inch of the ship is so thoughtfully designed that it never felt overwhelming. If you love the Oasis class ships, the Icon of the Seas is similar, but just slightly on steroids. And of course, who doesn’t love a ship that is shiny and new?

Q: What did you love most about the ship? – A: A WOW moment for me was walking out of the elevators on deck 16 into Chill Island and looking several stories down into Central Park. It gives you a unique vantage point of the center of the ship and all the beautiful live foliage they brought (and maintain!) onboard. I’m a thrill over chill type of person so I also really loved the waterslides onboard. Also, the entertainment and dining experiences onboard were expertly crafted too!

Q: What surprised you most about the ship? – A: Even though it is the biggest cruise ship in the world, it truly did not feel overwhelming. There are so many nooks and crannies on where you could go and never felt “crowded”. The new elevator system was a pleasant surprise to say the least. Instead of everyone going into the elevator and choosing a deck, you choose the deck you want to go to from a kiosk. A letter is given on the kiosk which corresponds to an elevator to go to. In my opinion, this is brilliant engineering to move many people without the common backlog at the elevators, especially after shows.

Q: There are five new neighborhoods on this ship. Can we talk about each of them?

            Q: The Aqua Dome –  A: A sensory delight. Enjoy lounging, entertainment and dining with unique and dazzling ocean views.

            Q: Chill Island – A: Pools, hot tubs, swim-up bar – need I say more?

            Q: Thrill Island – A: Waterslides, mini-golf, rock climbing, Crown’s Edge – thrill seekers unite and adults feel like kids again.

            Q: Surfside – A: My kids would have loved this neighborhood. Some adjectives that come to mind are delightful, colorful and fun.

Q: What was your favorite restaurant onboard? – A:

            Q: Complimentary? – A: I LOVED dinner in the main dining room, it was delicious to say the least. My favorite complimentary grab and go has to be El Loco Fresh because who couldn’t eat tacos every day of the week? The chips and salsa varieties were great and they had really good margaritas. We also love grabbing breakfast from the Park Café. They had a lot of great grab and go items (loved the parfaits) and also some made-to-order breakfast items (loved the ham, egg and cheese on an English muffin). The coffee was great too!

            Q: Specialty? – A: Since we sailed on an inaugural sailing, a lot of the specialty restaurants were not available to us, but we did get to sample the food at Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade. Playmakers offers all your favorite comfort foods and has a fun sports bar vibe to it including retro video games, a pool and foosball table and a few arcade games. This was probably the most crowded spot onboard as it was during football season and the only place onboard to see the playoff games.

Q: What was your favorite bar onboard? – A: Some of the bars are located in the Promenade and we had a lot of fun bar hopping. The Schooner Bar had a nice laid-back atmosphere and was beautiful. But our favorite bar had to have been 1400 which had a lot of fun cocktails and a signature martini with a blown bubble.

Q: What was your favorite entertainment onboard? – A: My favorite entertainment onboard had to be The Wizard of Oz. This Broadway hit musical was filled with so much talent, color, props, backgrounds, songs, dances and brought back everything you love about the movie. It truly was incredible to see!

Q: How many shows did you attend? – A: We saw three preview shows on our three-night cruise and included The Wizard of Oz, Elemental Beauty (ice skating) and Aqua Action! (aqua show)

Q: What other activities did you do onboard and which was your favorite? – A: We truly had fun exploring every inch of the ship and some highlights included winning a bronze medal in a glow-in-the-dark mini golf competition, winning some money in the casino, working up a sweat in the gym and running the track onboard. We also spent a good amount of time visiting every type of stateroom onboard and loved seeing everything from an Interior stateroom all the way up to the Ultimate Family suite.

Q: There are seven pools onboard, which one did you enjoy the most and why? – A: Hands down the Hideaway Pool was my favorite. For adults 18+, the pool is located at the back of the ship and is the first suspended infinity pool at sea. Perfect to hang in the pool with a cocktail and watch the sunset. Next would be the first swim up bar at sea (can never go wrong here!).

Q: What did you think of The Pearl? – A: Definitely another WOW moment. My husband, an engineer, was truly intrigued trying to figure out how it all worked being that it is the world’s largest kinetic art sculpture.

Q: What was the newest thing you saw on the ship that impressed you the most? – A: Not new to the Royal Caribbean brand, but Central Park at night was so magical. The vibrant colors against the night sky stop you in your tracks, is a plant lover’s dream, and provides a nice breeze from several decks above. In terms of most impressive, I have to go back to the elevator system. It may sound silly, but a “why didn’t I think of that”? idea.

Q: You mentioned you sailed to Perfect Day at CocoCay, Bahamas. What do you want to share about the port? – A: It’s a lot bigger than I thought it would be and truly has something for everyone. We really enjoyed partaking in the water park and all the water slides which is something we can’t do together when we have our kids with. If you are a thrill seeker, don’t miss out on Daredevil’s Peak as it is definitely worth the stair climb! If your idea of fun is toes in the sand and drink in hand, there are, I believe seven plus beaches on the island. We tested them all out and even stumbled across Rover, the Icon of the Seas’ Chief Dog Officer.

Q: Did you do anything special on the island? – A: We were signed up for a snorkel adventure, but unfortunately could not do this because of rough seas. But we did get to go to Hideaway Beach, the island’s adults-only area. We enjoyed elevated snacks, sipping on drinks in the island’s only heated pool which included a big swim up bar, lounging in lounge chairs, and swimming across the lagoon. There is an added cost for Hideaway Beach, but I would recommend it for anyone that likes a relaxed party vibe.

Q: What was your favorite part of Perfect Day at CocoCay? – A: We did really have fun exploring the whole island and think this could be an overnight port with all there is to do. I’d say our favorite would be going back to having fun on the water slides and bringing back some childhood fun as adults.

Q: Is there anything else we did not discuss that you would like to mention? – A: Of course!

            – You have to research Icon of the Seas and all that went into the sustainability when the ship was built. Most notably are the liquified natural gas engines—really awesome advancements onboard to be as eco-friendly as possible.

            – There are lots and lots of storage spaces in the staterooms, a really nice touch.

            – A lot of people I heard couldn’t find the safe in the stateroom, pro top: it’s behind the glass cabinet.

            – Don’t discredit the snack stands on Perfect Day at CocoCay, they were definitely our preference over the buffet.

            – If your pre-paid excursion gets cancelled by Royal Caribbean because of bad weather, they will automatically credit you back to your original form of payment (takes several days, but it does get done).

            – Always pay attention to information provided to you from your transportation company taking you to the pier. I had to help two-couples with transportation back to the Fort Lauderdale pier after they got on our bus to go to The Port of Miami. Thankfully, they made it in the nick of time, but I’d imagine it was so stressful to them (and also another reason to book with your favorite Boscov’s Travel Advisor).

Q: What do you recommend to anyone sailing on the Icon of the Seas? – A: Try a little bit of everything the ship has to offer and really soak in the beauty and memories made with your friends and family.

50 Years of Triumph

This year, Boscov’s Travel is celebrating their 50 year anniversary. As these 50 years have passed by in seemingly, a blink of an eye, Boscov’s Travel has weathered some of the world’s biggest storms from pandemics, the 9/11 terrorist attacks and much more. As I sat down for a discussion with the company’s President, Pat Cinfici, who has been with the company since the beginning, I gathered my thoughts on how it must have been to work here when these world events occurred. I honestly couldn’t fathom any of this, at least until our conversation.

“Certainly, we have weathered a lot – recessions, political climates, 9/11 and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic,” Cinfici said. I had just asked her what some of the biggest challenges have been in the last 50 years of Boscov’s Travel. Her tone changed to saddened as she began to remember the many times when mountains were climbed with challenges to overcome.

The Rise of the Internet

Before the internet, Cinfici recalls handwriting plane tickets with many steps and tariff books involved. Travel Advisors also had to search through brochures, following with a call to travel partners to book their client’s travel. The process was a tedious one that they completed every day. When the Internet arose, she explained there was a time where people thought it would be the demise of travel companies – for the sole fact that people were able to book travel on their own. Unfortunately, for some companies it was. But Boscov’s Travel stood their ground with their no cost for complete vacation package planning services, their diversified product, and trusted presence in the community – all which still stand as the foundation today. Cinfici explained, “You cannot get human connection from a “box” (computer), as you would working with a Travel Advisor.” ‘This is true,’ I thought.

Cinfici recalled the worst impact for her on a personal and professional level being the 9/11 terrorist attacks. With the loss of many lives that day and the horrible memories, this day was a tragedy. Cinfici says she can “still see the day as if it was yesterday.”

She explained that Boscov’s Travel used to have the Boscov’s Department Store television department underneath them at their East location. Cinfici’s secretary at the time was at the office with her, and one of their coworkers called them as she had not come in yet.

“She called and told us a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. We ran down to the televisions and saw it. The first consensus was this had to be a fluke. We knew this was happening, but none of us thought this was a terrorist attack. As we were down there, we watched as a second plane hit the other tower. These events changed the makeup of everything,” Cinfici said with tears in her eyes. She told me the loss of lives were the most horrific thing about that day. I agreed with her.

As far as travel was concerned, the air space was closed for some time so Boscov’s Travel put a team into place who worked around the clock to get clients home safely. They rented cars from all over the country for clients just so they could drive home. Even after clients were home, Boscov’s Travel still had a lot of work to do.

“We had to face the challenges of clients being ‘understandably’ afraid to get on an airplane, for what was a very long time,” Cinfici recalled. “Not only that, but I had to eliminate positions because the business fell off. For me, this was a hard thing to do as I was affecting people’s lives and these people were my professional family. It was very difficult.” Cinfici was crying at this point. I’ve worked for her for over two years and I’ve never heard the full impact of these events. While I knew the impact was there, I finally understood the pain she felt during those very times and even now – loss.

Even after things started to settle and became more ‘normal,’ phones were not ringing as much as they used to for Boscov’s Travel. Cinfici explained, “We had to go outside the Boscov’s Travel offices to make business and to find business. This was the only way we were able to truly survive as a company. It worked, not only by my efforts but a lot of people’s efforts.”

When Europe closed down due to the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano eruption, the ash affected the air which affected flights. This meant there were clients in Europe who couldn’t get home. “All of us, especially our Corporate Travel department worked tirelessly to get people home, but we got people home,” Cinfici explained. “We took our clients into different countries by boarding them via train to the next destination and so forth. As a country’s air space would close, we would get our clients to the next country. Italy was one of the last countries to close so we got them home through there.” These type of weather-related activities and even political climates are constantly changing the way people travel and Boscov’s Travel Advisors are on top of it day and night with a 24/7 emergency service line.

The COVID-19 Pandemic

We all know the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the entire world, not just a single country. Four years ago, a Global Pandemic was deemed and those days were extremely difficult for Boscov’s Travel.

“Those days were very hard. For me personally, they went very fast. My office was at my dining room table so when I would get up at 4AM, I’d come downstairs, power up the computer and try to think of an inspirational quote and message that would get people motivated. I didn’t want anyone scared and worried about what was going to happen to us. That was one of the biggest challenges during that time,” Cinfici expressed.

I personally, was not with the company at the time, but I couldn’t imagine it – what she had to do or what anyone had to do during this time. The times of the pandemic were difficult and the waters were murky. One thing I did know as I listened to Cinfici recall these events, is that she is a go-getter and cares about her staff and clients – so I knew she would push through until she couldn’t, and that she did.

Cinfici explained, “The days went by so fast because I was on the phone from morning to night with people. I couldn’t wait until we reopened the offices as I had to assist clientele and my staff at home. I was also dependent on the store and the government telling us when we could reopen. I actually think the only reason we got through the pandemic was because of God’s grace, truly. That which does not kill you will definitely make you stronger.”

With that being said, the world began to open back up and Boscov’s Travel staff were back in office. Cinfici told me, “It was hard because every day each country had different rules and regulations which were being changed. My employees were nervous to sell some things to clients because one day a country may have been open and the next it could’ve been closed again.” She explained it was a tough road to navigate. “We lost some key staff members. They left the travel industry because of how the world was and how difficult the industry was becoming due to it. This was difficult, very difficult for everyone. I don’t want to go through it again, and I don’t want the world to go through it again. I don’t want us as an industry to go through it, nor us as a company – ever again.”

Pat Cinfici only skimmed the surface of just some of the things Boscov’s Travel has seen over the past 50 years. If there’s anything to take away, it’s that as a travel company, Boscov’s Travel is subject to what’s going on in the world – whether that be weather, politics, and much more. This is why it’s so important that the company has survived.

“I believe we survived because we have diversified product. People can come here and go anywhere they want in the world. They can go on a one-day trip or take a trip around the world, or everything in between. One of the reasons we did survive through all of these hard times is because we had to change. Change is hard. Some people don’t change, but then they will not be as successful,” Pat longed. “You truly just have to put one foot in front of the other. You have to recognize the fact that if God brought you to it, God gets you through it. That’s how I face it.”

Recently, one of our Boscov’s Travel Advisors attended the ALG Vacations’ Ascend 2023 conference where she took daily classes, toured resorts and learned information and vacation ideas to bring back to YOU, our valued clients!

This fall 2023, I had the pleasure of attending an exclusive event hosted in Cancun, Mexico.  Ascend 2023 is an invite only, Travel Advisor event presented by ALG Vacations. The event exceeded and went way beyond all my expectations! ALG Vacations blew me away with all of the branding, participants in the gigantic trade show, guest speakers, lectures, entertainment, and the 600+ professional travel agents that were invited. Everything was truly top of the line. During the conference, I attended lectures, classes, breakout sessions and saw resorts which allowed me to bring back first-hand knowledge to our clients. As a Boscov’s Travel Advisor, I am continuously looking to travel and learn about the destinations and attractions that I think our clients would love.

With that being said, during the conference Travel Advisors were placed at five different large resorts. I ended up staying at the beautiful Royalton Chic Cancun. The Royalton Chic Cancun was truly stunning and located in the heart of Cancun’s beautiful beaches! I’ve personally been to Cancun eleven times, but have never stayed in the hotel zone which is where this resort is located. Needless to say, I enjoyed it very much!

With nine dining options (delicious), multiple pools, large well-appointed rooms, and a staff that exceeded my expectations, the resort did not disappoint. There is a rooftop party pool with private cabanas and guest DJ’s accessible to guests and the public for a fee. The resort’s beaches were stunning with perfectly turquoise, warm water. A neat feature the resort has is a keyless entry ID bracelet for resort guests that made access to the room easy-peasy. On top of that, the entertainment team and nightly shows were engaging and fun. The resort truly was incredible!

My Personal Experience on Boscov’s Travel Exclusive Private Non-Stop Charter Flights to Orlando & sailing on an MSC Cruises’ cruise

Recently one of our Boscov’s Travel Advisors took our Boscov’s Travel exclusive private non-stop charter flight to Orlando. Read her incredible experience below.

My husband and I went on the Boscov’s Travel exclusive private non-stop Orlando charter the week of October 22, 2023. We weren’t traveling with family this trip so we decided to forego the theme parks in the Orlando area and instead take a relaxing 4-night cruise to the Bahamas along with 2-days in St. Augustine after the cruise.

As a Boscov’s Travel employee, I have taken our charter several times before and it’s always been such a pleasurable experience compared to flying out of the other airports where there’s lots of traffic congestion and extra costs.  The Reading Regional Airport is easy to get to, easy to park (we were right in front of the terminal, mere steps away), and the Boscov’s Travel check-in and TSA security were fast and efficient (all done within a few minutes).  We did not have to pay to park, pay for our seats, or pay for luggage! When you add up all of these costs, these are big savings, plus driving time to the airport is a breeze!

The Southwest Airlines flight crew was friendly and welcoming and our plane ride was very fast and smooth (we arrived early). We were booked on the MSC Cruises’ Seaside sailing to Nassau and Ocean Cay – MSC Marine Reserve, Bahamas. We met an MSC Cruises representative shortly after our arrival at the Orlando International Airport and were effortlessly transferred to Port Canaveral (less than an hour ride) where we boarded the ship.

We had a cabin in the Yacht Club which is an exclusive ship-within-a-ship experience with excellent service from the ship’s staff (special praise to Jordan, our waiter and Glen, our butler). As part of the Yacht Club experience, a private butler meets you at the pier and escorts you onto the ship bypassing the long lines. We were checked in promptly at their Concierge Desk and were eating a delicious lunch within minutes at their private dining room. Our Yacht Club experience included the Premium Beverage package, unlimited Wi-Fi and complimentary access to the Thermal Spa area.

Our first stop was Nassau, Bahamas which has a very nice and new Port Terminal & Shops.  If you traveled to Nassau in the past, you may remember the old straw market and vendors.  This was not a pleasant experience… very claustrophobic and chaotic with lots of pressure from the vendors to buy their wares.  This new Port Terminal & Shops is very clean, bright and organized with lots of open space, beautiful landscaping and friendly vendors. Such a great improvement! After our shopping jaunt, we returned to the ship where I decided to take advantage of the Thermal Spa (my husband went off to explore the ship). I spent two hours experiencing all the features which included a steam room, two saunas (a dry and a European), a snow room, a salt room, a Vitality pool with oxygen-intensified water, an aromatherapy shower and a heated stone lounge chair. I absolutely loved these last four options!

Our next stop was Ocean Cay – MSC Marine Reserve, their private island.  This island was a former industrial site where sand was excavated that MSC reclaimed and restored to its natural beauty. What was nice about this stop was we were here overnight so we didn’t feel rushed and could enjoy a leisurely day and a half at the beach using the ship as our hotel. As part of the Yacht Club, we were escorted off the ship by our private butler (again bypassing the lines) and taken by a dedicated tram to the Ocean House Beach & Restaurant.  The Restaurant was very nice and served several options for lunch including local fish, lobster and tropical drinks.

The beach here is pretty, but we decided to walk a short distance to the North Beach which was located on the lagoon and had beautiful calm clear water with a palm tree-lined beach. On our walk we passed Bimini Beach which has a spectacular lighthouse and views. In the evening, the beach is filled with night-life including a beach party and light show!

We disembarked the ship on Thursday morning and picked up the car rental shuttle at the pier for the next part of our adventure. We got our car then drove to St. Augustine! Our drive took a little over two hours as we took the scenic route rather than major toll-ways. We checked into the Casa Monica Resort (part of the Marriott Autograph Collection), which is a beautiful hotel built in 1888 nestled in the heart of St. Augustine’s Historic District. We spent the afternoon exploring this area which was all within walking distance of our hotel. Later, we had dinner at a quaint little restaurant called Forgotten Tonic. The restaurant reminded us of dining in a cafe on a Mediterranean street.

The next day we took a narrated sightseeing tour of St. Augustine’s historic landmarks on Ripley’s Red Train tour. A special perk is they offer military and senior discounts, but you must ask for it.  Our driver/guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining as he told us about the history of America’s oldest city.  After this tour, we went back to the Orlando area for our overnight stay at the Embassy Suites-Orlando International Airport. The next day check-in at the airport was easy with the help of the dedicated Southwest staff at the North East Flight Departures ticket counter. We did check in three hours ahead of our flight departure time because security lines at Orlando International Airport can be very long. Our flight back to Reading Regional Airport was again enjoyable with a colorful fall aerial view of Berks County as we arrived back in Reading.

We had a wonderful vacation and the charter was truly the best way to get to Orlando!
